James Buchanan

James BuchananJames Buchanan is a co-founder of Buchanan and Stouffer. Throughout his legal career of more than three decades, Jim has concentrated his practice in the areas of personal tax, estate, and closely-held business planning, primarily for entrepreneurs and professionals.

Jim works with a broad range of clients, including entrepreneurs, professionals, and people with investments or businesses in oil and gas, agricultural activities, manufacturing and real estate development. He assists and counsels them in developing estate strategies that support their personal or charitable goals, minimize taxation, insure that family members with special needs are taken care of and, when appropriate, protect family wealth from legal action. Jim’s approach begins with listening closely to the client, gradually developing a sense of their values, priorities and wishes, and ultimately working with them to develop effective, creative strategies to put those objectives into practice.

Jim’s undergraduate, law and Master of Laws in taxation degrees are from the University of Denver. He is a frequent author, and has spoken nationally and internationally, on estate planning-related topics.

James BuchananIn addition to his professional undertakings, Jim has an extensive personal record of broad-based philanthropic activity. In 1984, Jim founded the Colorado-based Consortium for Community Centered Comprehensive Child Care (“C6”), a tax-exempt corporation organized to address the needs of medically underserved children in developing areas through design, construction, equipping, and administration of pediatric health care facilities in distant places. The first C6 project, Kilimanjaro Children’s Hospital, situated in northern Tanzania, East Africa, was initiated shortly after C6 came into existence, and was completed several years ago. The facility treats 44,000 young patients each year.

The second C6 undertaking, known as Ten Thousand Kids, is a pediatric public health outreach and primary care program for southwestern Colorado. Its first effort, a mobile medical/dental clinic, was completed in 2007 and presently serves children of the predominantly Hispanic community in Colorado’s San Luis Valley. In its first 18 months of operation the clinic provided care and treatment for over 5,000 young patients. A second mobile clinic, slated for use by the Ute Indian population in Colorado’s Four Corners area, is on the drawing board. Its primary focus will be eradication of fetal alcohol syndrome, an epidemic-level threat to the survival of Native American children in the American Southwest.
